Super Spicy Sensation from Tambak Banyumas
ENG | 30 November 2013 | 12:18
I am the real spicy food lover. When I
was kid, almost every night I bought super spicy fried rice near my
home. Meanwhile, after school, I usually made sambal (chili
sauce) by myself as addition for my lunch menu. For me, the sensation of
chili always makes me get encouraged. Until this time, I am always
excited when someone recommends me a place providing spicy menu.
When I had a business trip to Banyumas
regency, Central Java in September 2013, I had a goal to visit “Warung
Sate Bebek Pak Encus” in Tambak, an area in Banyumas. I got that
must-try recommendation from couple friends mentioning that place was
worth place to visit for its super spicy menu. This is one of many
similar restaurants/street food stalls in that area. “Warung Sate Bebek
Pak Encus” is a traditional restaurant with duck meat-based menus. That
business was established in 1994 with the main menu of sate bebek (duck meat satay). The other menus are bebek goreng (fried duck meat), gulai bebek (duck curry), and rica-rica bebek (the spicy duck meat menu). Of course, as the super spicy food lover, I pick the choice of rica-rica bebek.
Rica-rica itself comes from the word
“rica” from Manado languge having meaning chili or spicy. The name
represents the spicy taste very well. Not only duck meat which is
commonly cooked in rica-rica style, but also chicken meat and fish. The
way of making rica-rica is actually simple. Firstly, stir-fry seasonings
made from the chili, shallot, and onion which have been pestled into
pan with fried oil. Then add lemongrass and lime leaves. Furthermore,
put duck meat with some water, add some salt and sugar in measurement as
you like, stir until the meat is well cooked, and it is ready to eat.
Commonly, rica-rica is served in oily presentation. Hmmm…yummy and so
tempting!
I was so excited for that special
dinner. This sensation encourages me to add one more plate of rice with
two glasses of orange juice. Sweat and sweat! So satisfying! :) However,
if you do not really like spicy foods, you may try other options as I
have mentioned before like bebek goreng, and sate bebek. But, the menu of bebek goreng is also accompanied” by super spicy sambal bawang (mixed chili and onion sauce). You may take out that sambal bawang if you want to “play safe” without spicy sensation. As additional information, this restaurant also provides sate kambing
(mutton satay). The seller said the mutton is taken from young goat so
it is bit safer to eat for those who have hypertension. Another
information that I may add is the price of the foods is not written on
the list at the first place. The price is generally customized from
daily market pricing of the ingredients. So, it is recommended to ask
first the price before order. Well, at the end I may say that spicy food
really makes my life become more exciting and I will share more about
spicy foods in another post :)
